The Onaquis.
Wild Spirits of the West
Onaqui wild horses so grand
Roam free in the deserts of Utah's land
With strength and endurance
Their beauty is immense
Nature's true work,
on display at command.
There is something profoundly moving about seeing wild horses exactly as they were meant to be—living freely beneath endless skies, bound only to one another and the rugged landscape they call home.
The Onaqui horses of Utah embody the enduring spirit of the American West. Across the sweeping valleys and desert mountains of the Great Basin, they live as they have for generations, forming close family bands, raising their young, and navigating the challenges of life in the wild. Their lives are shaped by loyalty, resilience, and an extraordinary bond with one another.
Each time I visit the Onaqui range, I am reminded that these horses are more than beautiful subjects to photograph. They are living symbols of freedom, strength, and the untamed spirit that still exists in a rapidly changing world. My goal is not simply to document them, but to create images that reflect their dignity, their individuality, and the quiet moments that reveal who they truly are.
I hope these photographs encourage others to look beyond the iconic image of the wild horse and recognize what is at stake. The Onaqui herd—and America's remaining wild horses—are part of our shared natural heritage. Their future depends on our willingness to protect the landscapes they roam and ensure that generations to come can experience the wonder of seeing them run free beneath the western sky.
In 1971 THE WILD FREE-ROAMING HORSES AND BURROS ACT OF 1971 (PUBLIC LAW 92-195) was adopted by the US Government in order to protect wild horses in the West.
